Orthopaedic Basic Science for the Postgraduate Examination: Practice MCQs and EMQs

Designed for trainees preparing to sit the written section of the FRCS (Tr & Orth) or equivalent examination. Whilst much of the general orthopaedic curriculum is often learnt from clinical exposure, knowledge of the basic sciences frequently requires more specific attention. Drawing partly on material from the hugely successful Orthopaedic Research UK courses, this book simultaneously provides a tool for assessing knowledge levels and a means of rapidly assimilating detailed facts. The authors are all approaching, or have achieved completion of higher surgical and fellowship training, but have sufficiently recent experience of postgraduate orthopaedic examinations to ensure that the questions are representative of the level and scope required.

Designed for trainees preparing to sit the oral section of the FRCS (Tr & Orth) or equivalent examination. There is a temptation for exam preparation to focus all too heavily on pure knowledge acquisition at the expense of practising viva technique. This book therefore aims to stimulate a more problem-based approach through the use of mock vivas, as well as encouraging candidates to practise drawing out and labelling the diagrams frequently asked by examiners. These concise revision notes are aimed at candidates preparing for UK and international FRCS (Trauma & Orthopaedics) exit examination as well as the European Board (EBOT) and SICOT diplomas. Mr Mark Latimer, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Addenbrooke’s Hospital

Mr Latimer works as a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at both Addenbrooke’s Hospital and at Peterborough and Stamford Hospitals. He has a specialist interest in children’s orthopaedics, adult lower limb surgery and trauma surgery.

Before studying medicine he graduated from Oxford University with a master’s degree in engineering, economics and management. He studied pre-clinical medicine at Oxford and clinical medicine at Cambridge. He joined the East Anglian Orthopaedic Rotation in 2002.

He passed his FRCS (T&O) exams in 2007 and was selected for the prestigious Ingham Fellowship in paediatric orthopaedic surgery in Sydney.
