Overview

Course Convenors: Mr Gareth Chan, T&O Registrar, Western Sussex Hospitals and Mr Tom Crompton, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust

This one day course is designed for foundation trainees with an interest in orthopaedics, core surgical trainees, acute care common stem emergency medicine trainees and accident and emergency nurses.

Educational aims and learning objectives:

•    Develop a basic understanding of the principles of casting
•    Acquire tips and tricks to make the casting process easier
•    Learn specific casts for common fracture patterns (distal radius, midshaft forearm, ankle & midshaft tibia/fibula)
•    Learn specialised casts such as hanging casts, sugar tong casts & thumb spicas
•    Fulfil requirement for trauma & orthopaedics ST3 application

By train

It is a 15 minute walk to Jurys Inn Brighton Waterfront from Brighton mainline train station.

Car parking

The Lanes car park is situated just underneath the hotel. There are 2 entrances, one off Black Lyon Street and one directly at the front. The car park is on a first arrive first serve basis therefore spaces cannot be reserved in advance. The hotel lifts are situated on level -2 and -4. A ticket will be provided at the entrance through the machine

Please keep the ticket and present it at the Front Desk at your check out time or if you need to leave the car park. Residents receive a discounted rate of £21.00 for 24 hours. Including the resident discount, this car park is one of the cheapest options in Brighton.

Mr Gareth Chan, T&O Registrar, Western Sussex Hospitals

Gareth is currently on the KSS rotation and based at Western Sussex Hospitals. He obtained his training number in 2018 as the top scoring candidate in the national recruitment process. Prior to this he trained at UCL Medical School, intercalating in musculoskeletal sciences at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, and completed his academic foundation and core surgical training in Brighton. Gareth teaches widely on undergraduate and postgraduate courses, and is an Honorary Clinical Lecturer at Brighton & Sussex Medical School.

Mr Tom Crompton, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust

Tom is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Brighton & Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust.

He has held paediatric orthopaedic fellowships at Westmead Children’s Hospital Sydney and The Royal London Hospital.
